What is Payroll Giving?
Payroll Giving is an easy and tax efficient way for people to give to charities. The donation is made directly from your pay before tax, which increases the value of the donation at no extra cost to you. All the administration is done by Inland Revenue appointed agencies - all you need to do is tell your employer how much you wish to donate and to which causes.
Why choose to donate through Payroll Giving?
It is simple to set up, and you will be providing Africa Now with a valuable, and regular donation every payday to help us plan for the future and continue to support disadvantaged communities across Africa. It's as easy as that!
How does Payroll Giving work?
The first question to ask is whether your employer offers a Payroll Giving scheme. Your payroll officer should be able to provide you with the answer. If they do, you can fill in a form to authorise your employer to deduct a regular donation to Africa Now from your pay. Your employer pays these donations to a Payroll Giving agency approved by the Inland Revenue and the agency will give this contribution to Africa Now.
The benefits of Payroll Giving
The agreed deductions your employer makes from your pay are done before you pay tax, which means that you get tax relief included in your donation at your top rate of tax.
Donating £5.00 to Africa Now will only cost you £3.90 if you are a basic rate tax payer, and only £3.00 if you are a higher rate tax payer.
If you pledge £10.00, it will only cost you £7.80. If you are a higher rate tax payer, it will cost you £6.00.
If you pledge £50, it will only cost you £39.00. If you are a higher rate tax payer, it will cost you £30.00.
What if my employer does not offer Payroll giving?
Ask them why not and suggest that they start one - it is easy and inexpensive to your company. They can find more information on how to run a payroll giving scheme from the Inland Revenue or from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). CAF and Africa Now have a range of materials that can help you promote to scheme to your colleagues and employers.
Does your employer have less than 500 employees?
There is a payroll giving grants scheme currently operating to reward employers with fewer than 500 staff for setting up a Payroll Giving scheme. Grants of up to £500 are on offer for employers to cover costs or donate to charity. See the Payroll Giving Grants website for more information, including advice on where to begin. It takes very little time to administer and will have long lasting benefits for Africa Now.
