Fashion Show Fundraiser for Africa Now!
On Sunday 11th March 2007, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, students from Oxford Brookes University organised an ethical fashion show to raise money for Africa Now. The event was brought to life by the efforts of Africa Now volunteer and Oxford Brookes student, Helen Nicholson who wanted to plan a student-run event that would raise money for Africa Now. This ambition, combined with her contacts in the Ethical Fashion Forum, inspired her idea for the show. The samples exhibited during the fashion show were kindly lent by a number of ethical clothing companies, namely, Tonic T-Shirts, Enamore, Epona, Terra Plana (shoes), Fresh, Judith Condor Vidal and Emm Design.
As well as the fashion show, there were various stalls, tea and homemade cakes, and a raffle with a fantastic collection of prizes. The music for the fashion show was played live by local band, The Blank Pages and there was more enchanting entertainment from Senegalese musician, Jali Fily Cissoko, playing the Kora. The event had great interest from local media prior to the event and on the day, more than 120 people attended the event. The day was a great success, bringing students and the local community together and raising a grand total of £1073.55 for Africa Now!
