Schools' Beekeeping in Kenya - 'top of the class!'
Teach A Man To Fish will present Africa Now's Kenya Country Representative, David Otieno, with second prize in the Educating Africa - Pan-African Award for Entrepreneurship in Education 2008. This prestigious award will be presented at the annual international conference on Sustainable Education, 'Education That Pays For Itself 2008', in South Africa from the 18th - 20th November 2008. The award acknowledges the success of Africa Now's innovative School Beekeeping programme in western Kenya.
School Beekeeping Programme, Kenya
The project works to give students a brighter future after leaving school.
This successful approach to reducing poverty is good for both students and schools. Beehives take up little land, and requires less time and physical labour to maintain than other farmed produce. This makes beekeeping an ideal enterprise for individuals of all ages and abilities.
By introducing beekeeping enterprises in to schools students are gaining valuable business management and financial skills. Africa Now has linked producers to a local partner organisation, Honey Care Africa, who purchase the honey for a fixed and fair price. Honey Care Africa package and sell the honey in supermarkets across Africa. This extra income enables schools to purchase teaching equipment, such as textbooks and desks, further benefiting the students future.
"I would like to thank both Teach A Man To Fish and Educating Africa for acknowledging all the hard work and committment that the schools involved in this project have made. I would also like to thank our loyal supporters, as without their donations this achievement would not have been possible. Asante Sana (thank you)!"
